"I wanted to incorporate these new pieces into my usual practice of producing small batches of functional pottery. Making and thinking about soap dishes gives me pleasure, evoking previous traditions, eras, bathrooms and kitchens I remember and loved. With 2020’s urgent and detailed instructions on hand washing plus the wearing of face masks gradually becoming obligatory, combining these two constant elements in our new lives seemed both humorous and serious. A face mask with drainage holes? A total contradiction but when made in ceramic is given a new function."
