I travel and the paintings show the inner landscape made by impressions and memories associated with places visited, making an order out of the jumble of remembered thoughts and recollections by putting down the defining connotations of a place and expressing the colours, shapes, mood and sensations experienced there. I sketch and make notes on site but paint back in my studio grasping echoes and re-living places.
The other side of painting is the intellectual challenge involved in making a picture using the given components of form, colour and space. Harmony or tensions are evoked by the spatial relationships and the many layers of colours and lines interweaving to give depth and involvement. |
