Bettina Furnee

I have worked independently as a letter cutter and public artist in Cambridge since 1989. My work is predominantly site specific and text and is made to commission. I collaborate with clients, local communities, poets and writers to create literary content. Most projects have resulted in permanent pieces as part of the built environment, and recent projects have combined text, sculpture and light.

As a letter cutter I have made many private memorials to commission. I have produced text based work for exhibitions. My public art projects evolve from an interest in the history and future of a particular site. I try to address the hidden bonds, disputes and absurdities of memory and language and arrive at a work which carries a dense and poetic image. Early pieces (Victoria Square, Birmingham, 1993) are introductions of text into an existing environment. Later work ('Running through the Blue', Basingstoke, 2003, and 'Paradise Is', Letchworth, 2003) involves the creation of a new environment and text.
