Jill Ogilvy - Painter and printmaker

My paintings and prints are often based on the landscape or begin with a sense of place. Recent work is concerned with a sense of identity and relationship, represented by the vessel in various forms. I am also interested in exploring the universal themes of memory, loss, and the passage of time.

Over recent months, I have been exploring the ancient technique of wax encaustic, in which coloured pigment is mixed with molten wax to create a versatile painting medium. I exploit the fact that as with printmaking, images can be built up in layers to create depth. Encaustic offers greater flexibility as all kinds of objects and elements can be incorporated into the work; torn paper, string, metal, card, leaves, berries, peppercorns. Almost anything that can withstand heat can be included. The lustrous sheen of the surface may then be textured or buffed up to a smooth sheen. I can combine a variety of media and techniques to interpret my ideas. Images may begin with a certain moment in time, or more often, are distilled from a series of memories and experiences. They may include the remnant of something old, or the fragment of a dream, exploring an inner world. These intangible fragments may offer the viewer a glimpse of recognition or perhaps some sense of universal connection, buried deep within the layers of wax.
