Alexandra Drysdale

Alexandra is currently studying for an MFA at Cambridge School of Art. Her BA(hons) was from Chelsea School of Art (1985).

She is a member of CAM(Cambridge Arts Movement) at Williams Art, Cambridge www.williamsart.co.uk

In 2010 she was selected for the Escalator Retreat In Fluxus at Wysing Arts Centre, Cambs. – 4 day programmed event for 10 artists and curators.

My work combines singular art objects, installation and performance. The objects are made of fragments of second rate materials lying around my home (newspapers, string, tape, sticks, shoe polish) held together by tape and glue. Their impoverished appearance contradicts the assumption that an artwork should be complete, confident, and accomplished and somehow more important than ordinary life. I want my work to be part of ordinary life, and to celebrate so-called negative values such as social failure, personal insignificance and one’s feeble attempts at making art. All this is coloured by a playful self-mockery at my own belief in the importance of spending time making art, the social importance accredited to the artist and the preciousness of the singular art object.
